Atomic Bombshells raise Golden Skate, 115-102

Your champions. The Atomic Bombshells.

No simple feat. The ABS and the Rockits tore down the Roy last Saturday. The Rockits – a team filled with rookies and first-year transfers – came close three times to pulling ahead of the storied ABS squad…but the Bombshells held back their the march of their opponents for forty minutes and took the win.

Atomic Bombshells v Rockits

“We’re promising two second halves for tonight!” – Scarmen Hellectra, shortly before the bout.

The Atomic Bombshells claimed the lead immediately. L’exi Cuter scored eight as Venus Thightrap and Hurtrude Stein denied the Rockits’ Commander Nix an exit from the pack. Juke bent through the pack to score four more as Harmony went down in a tangle with Diamond Rough’s foot in her face. Only two jams in, the ABS went up 12-0.

The Rockits often have a hard time getting started in big matches; their second half is usually their comeback from a significant deficit. As Scarmen predicted, the Rockits took little time bouncing back. Over the next four jams, the women In red earned every lead jam and allowed only four points scored by the ABS to their own 13. Rockit blockers Vuedoo Prodigy and Bernasty clamped down on the agile ABS blockers, making them fight for each pass.

The ABS restarted with Fannie Tanner worrying her way past a relentless Tiny Neurotic Terror for the lead. Fannie scored four. ABS jammer Juke Boxx followed with another lead while jamming against Vuedoo Prodigy. Vue had just about broken through for her initial pass when Lizzy the Axe tapped her out of bounds…Vue came back in ahead of Lizzy, and you could see that she knew she had made a mistake.

POWER JAM JUKE. Juke sent the ABS on the go-ahead in the 12th minute with an apex-jumping, blocker-defeating 20-point jam – even despite Rockit blocker Dreidel Robber guiding her pack to position themselves in the right places. 39-13, ABS up.

Two jams later, a track cut by ABS jammer Freeze Baby gave Harmony a Rockit power jam…but Harmony could not bust past Hurtrude Stein and Diamond Rough well enough to score more than five points. However, the Rockits’ co-captain Nix earned the next lead as Venus Thightrap got stuck behind Scarmen Hellectra’s mighty blocking.

Over the next minutes, the Rockits clawed their way back. It wasn’t easy; Hurtrude Stein was playing two of every three jams and seemed to be in every Rockit’s way, whether blocker or jammer. Retiring skaters Mitzi Massacre and Flora Flipabitch found new ways to be awesome in their final bout.

In the final jam of the half, Commander Nix brought the Rockits back to within thirteen as Killahertz and Buzz Tightrear dueled in the pack with opposing jammer L’exi Cuter and Juke Boxx (attempting to open up space for L’ex).

HALFTIME:  Atomic Bombshells 55-42 Rockits

Harmony took the first lead jam of the half against L’exi Cuter, but lost it as both jammers were sent to the box. Hurtrude Stein picked up Harmony as she left the box and chained her attacks on the veteran Rockit lap after lap. L’exi ended up winning the jam, scoring 13 points to Harmony’s 8.

The Rockits’ focus collapsed over the next eight minutes as red blocker after red blocker got called on back- and multi-player blocks. The ABS’ five jammers surged, scoring 32 points against consecutive short Rockit packs. Harmony earned the lead jam in the 29th minute and took four points, but the ABS had scored big. The clock was now a factor. 100-58, ABS ahead.

The final onslaught began on the track as players seemingly tried to one-up each other. Vuedoo Prodigy ducked under Bombshells bent on destruction for a lead jam and four points. Diamond Rough, Skullateral Damage, and Venus slowed the breathtaking speed of Nix and Harmony to a standstill. Hurtrude Stein cleared space for her Bombshell jammers, plowing through Buzz Tightrear and Ana Stick. Harmony did some plowing of her own, dropping a backwards-skating Diamond Rough. But no team had the advantage, and the clock kept ticking.

With three minutes remaining, Lizzy looked like she could put a lid on the bout with an ABS lead jam. However, a forearm sent her to the box and Commander Nix wound up with a power jam. However, Nix could only score five due to dogged blocking by Juke Boxx. ABS up, 115-73.

Harmony stepped to the line against Freeze Baby with less than a minute to go. Scoring forty-two points is possible in a single jam, but it requires speed, a lead jam…and a little luck. The whistle blew and Harmony flew.

Finding her way through the inside, Harmony earned the lead and started spinning up for her first lapping pass. Meanwhile, Scarmen trapped Freeze Baby and drew a track cut. Hurtrude Stein and Skullateral Damage joined Freeze Baby in the box. ROCKIT MINIVAN. The Rockits halted the pack and Harmony came in, pass after pass. She had lapped four times by the time Hurtrude returned to the track. Hurtrude – as she had so many times that bout – stopped Harmony in her tracks, sending her down and inside. Harmony was forced to recycle to the back of the pack as time wound down to zero.

Harmony and her pack had brought the Rockits within 15…but the ABS took the win.

And the Skate.
