Dino-Sore Bout Recap
Game 1: Maul Rats vs. Wednesday Warnings
The first semifinal featured the last two Golden Skate winners, the Wednesday Warnings and the Maul Rats. The Warnings came into the bout undefeated, while the Maul Rats were winless. Sintripetal Force opened the bout with 4 points for the Warnings, but Twisted Transistor came back with 4 Maul Rat points to tie the game. In the next jam, Gams committed an early penalty to give T-Wrecks a power jam. After T-Wrecks scored 3 points for the Warnings, she called off the jam, giving Sintripetal Force a power start. She took advantage of the opportunity, scoring 8 points. Bri Zuss followed with 3 more, giving the Warnings an early 18-4 lead.
A physical jam followed, as it took T-Wrecks over a minute to become the first jammer to make her initial pass. However, she was not the lead jammer because of a no pass, no penalty situation. (She passed a Maul Rat blocker while both of them were out of bounds, which isn’t a penalty but forfeits the ability to become lead.) Bunnicula also couldn’t become lead jammer for the Maul Rats after receiving a star pass from Velvet Wench, so the jam went the full two minutes. After all that, they split the jam 4-4.
For the second straight jam, the first jammer out of the pack was not the lead jammer. This time, it was BooBoo of the Maul Rats, who was closely followed by Sintripetal Force. Sintripetal Force called off the jam before BooBoo reached the pack on her scoring pass, ending the jam scoreless. Twisted Transistor then secured a quick lead for the Maul Rats, scoring 3 points and bringing their score to double digits. Sintripetal Force came back with an 8-0 jam, leaving the score at 30-11 for the Warnings.
Yet again, the Maul Rats fell victim to a no pass, no penalty situation, as Crashy Go Lucky was the first to escape the pack but could not become lead jammer. She did, however, get a power jam en route to scoring 20 points. Four points at the end of the jam by Bizzquick – who had received the star from Bri Zuss after the penalty – kept the Warnings up 34-31. T-Wrecks took almost the entire 2 minutes of the next jam to secure lead, but she squeezed in 2 points before the whistle.
The next two jams were scoreless, but the one after that more than made up for it. Sintripetal Force raced out to a quick lead and kept breezing through her scoring passes as if she were the only skater on the track. She completed nine scoring passes for a total of 34 points, by far the largest jam of the season. While Gams tried to keep up, she “only” scored 12, making the score 70-43 and taking the wind out of the Maul Rats’ sails. T-Wrecks added 7 more in a jam that went the full 2 minutes, but Switch Please then outscored Bizzquick 6-4 to close the half on a high for the Maul Rats. Still, the Warnings had a comfortable 81-49 lead at halftime.
BooBoo opened the half with a 3-0 Maul Rat jam, then Twisted Transistor raced to a quick lead and outscored T-Wrecks 6-1. Sintripetal Force picked up a quick penalty in the next jam, giving the Maul Rats a power jam, but Killer Bea was not the lead jammer because she had received a star pass. She outscored Sintripetal Force 7-6, but the jam ended when she was injured. (Killer Bea later returned to the bout.) Crashy Go Lucky then used a power jam to score 2 points, cutting the Rats’ deficit to 88-67.
Neither team scored in the next jam, but a 4-0 BooBoo jam after that brought the score within 20 points. Twisted Transistor then added 4 more, with Bri Zuss’s 1 in that jam making the score 89-75. For the fourth time of the night, a no pass, no penalty situation prevented the first jammer out from becoming lead. This time, it was Gams, while T-Wrecks secured lead soon after to give the Warnings their first lead jam of the half. Courtesy of 4 points each from Gams and Switch Please, the Maul Rats outscored T-Wrecks 8-5 to leave the score at 94-83.
With the Warnings’ lead slipping away, they needed to stop the bleeding, and Sintripetal Force stepped up with a 4-0 jam. Bri Zuss followed that with another 4-0 jam, putting the Warnings over the century mark. Still, their progress was erased in the next jam, as Switch Please outscored Sintripetal Force 12-4 to bring the Rats’ deficit back to 11. Trying to cut it to single digits, BooBoo secured lead in the next jam, but she was penalized, allowing T-Wrecks to outscore her 6-4. That didn’t matter to Twisted Transistor, who erupted with a 12-point jam to cut the deficit to a single point.
Sintripetal Force got the Warnings back on track with a 3-0 jam, and she could have scored more if Gams hadn’t been injured to force a call-off. Deprived of a full jam, Sintripetal Force wore the star in the next jam as well, where she secured lead again. Despite Crashy Go Lucky scoring first, Sintripetal Force won the jam 10-8, putting the Warnings up 125-119 with 3:37 left. T-Wrecks followed with a massive 5-0 jam, leaving the Warnings ahead 130-119 when the Maul Rats called a timeout with 2:48 to go.
After a minute of tough blocking, BooBoo became the lead jammer, but she struggled in her scoring pass as well. Bizzquick, who had received a star pass from Bri Zuss, took advantage, outscoring her 9-4. With the Maul Rats electing not to take a timeout, they trailed 139-123 with 32 seconds left. Twisted Transistor secured lead and scored 4 points, but she picked up a penalty to give Sintripetal Force a power jam. Sintripetal Force played a clean jam and outscored Twisted Transistor 10-9, giving the Warnings a 149-132 win. With the win, they advance to their second championship bout in 3 years, while the Rats – despite their best performance of the season – will have to fight for third.
Game 2: Bodies of Water vs. Roller Vortex
The second bout matched the Roller Vortex against the Bodies of Water, two teams searching for their first championship. The Vortex handily defeated the Bodies 151-87 in November. Lexi Cuter, who missed the Vortex’s bout in January, opened the scoring with 1 point. Krypta Night responded with 3 points, giving the Bodies their first lead of the bout. Lefse 4 Dead came right back, outscoring Anne T. fascism 10-5 and snatching the lead right back for the Vortex. R.I.P.unzel then raced out to a quick lead and 7 points for the Vortex, giving them an 18-8 lead.
Chippa Tooth answered with 1 point for the Bodies, but Lexi Cuter came back with 11 points to put the Vortex up 20. Wheelie Nelson then added 11 of her own, with Polar Blair’s 1 leaving the Vortex lead at 40-10. Fanny Smack stopped the bleeding with 4 points in the next jam, then another 6 for Chippa Tooth put the Bodies back within 20. Battlerina then scored 8 for the Vortex, giving them a 48-20 lead.
Lexi Cuter followed that by using a power jam to erupt for 16 points, but Fanny Smack came right back with a 14-0 jam of her own to cut the margin back to 30 points. Chippa Tooth then secured another lead for the Bodies, but she and MadLibs – who had received a star pass – could only split the jam 4-4. Polar Blair continued the run for the Bodies, scoring 3 more to cut the Vortex lead to 68-41.
Thanks to a power jam, Anne T. fascism erupted for 20 points, cutting the Bodies’ deficit to single digits for the first time since the third jam of the bout. Fanny Smack then got lead but failed to score, while Chippa Tooth closed the half with a 2-0 jam. Despite trailing by 44 with 8:30 left in the half, the Bodies of Water went into the locker room only down 68-63.
The Roller Vortex came out of the break energized, and they started the second half with a massive 16-1 jam by Lefse 4 Dead. Lexi Cuter then added 5 more, putting the Vortex up by 25. R.I.P.unzel electrified the crowd in the next jam, performing an apex jump on her second scoring pass en route to a 19-0 jam. With that jam, the Vortex crossed the century mark and led 108-64, equaling their largest lead so far at 44 points.
Battlerina secured another lead for the Vortex, but she was held scoreless. In the jam after that, Fanny Smack stopped the run with a 4-0 jam, bringing the Bodies back within 40. That didn’t last long, though, as Lexi Cuter added 7 for the Vortex to put them ahead by 47. Anne t. fascism responded with 3 for the Bodies, but Battlerina followed that with a quick lead. She outscored Fanny Smack 3-2, giving the Vortex a 118-73 lead.
The Bodies needed to start a comeback right away, and Chippa Tooth and Anne T. fascism did their parts. They each posted 4-0 jams, cutting the deficit to 37. Fanny Smack then raced out to a quick lead and scored 6 points, but Wheelie Nelson’s 4 kept the Vortex up 35 at the end of the jam. Chippa Tooth then used a power jam to score 8 points, but she called off the jam after being knocked to the ground. That gave Anne T. fascism a power start, and she scored 2 points to cut the deficit to 122-97.
In the crucial next jam, neither team’s blockers gave an inch as R.I.P.unzel and Polar Blair fought to become the lead jammer. R.I.P.unzel passed the star to MadLibs, who got out of the pack with 30 seconds left but did not have lead privileges. After completing one scoring pass, she beat the whistle with an apex jump to complete a second, giving the Vortex a 130-97 lead and more breathing space.
Battlerina followed that by outscoring Bodies newcomer McFly 4-0, then Lexi Cuter posted a 3-0 jam to put the Vortex up 40. Lefse 4 Dead then gave the Vortex their third straight lead jam, but she was outscored 13-12 by Anne T. fascism. She called it off with enough time for one final jam, where R.I.P.unzel secured lead and called it off before starting a scoring pass. With the 149-110 victory, the Vortex advance to their first ever championship bout, where they will face the undefeated Wednesday Warnings. Meanwhile, the Bodies will play for third against the Maul Rats in a rematch of last year’s championship.
