Derby 9 to 5 Bout Recap
Game 1: Roller Vortex vs. Bodies of Water
The season-opening bout pitted the Bodies of Water, second-place finishers for two years running, against the Roller Vortex, who finished third last season. Lexi Cuter began the bout with 16 points to Scam Likely’s 3, giving the Vortex the lead after one jam. Ginger Snap answered with a 12-3 jam for the Bodies, then Anne T. fascism scored 8 without reply to give the Bodies of Water their first lead, 23-19. A defensive jam followed, as it took Krypta Night over a minute to get lead jammer, and she was only able to score 1 point to extend the Bodies’ advantage. XboxBree60 made her Bodies of Water debut at the jammer line in the next jam, but she was assessed an early penalty to give Captain Cordelia a power jam. However, Captain Cordelia was then sent to the box, giving XboxBree60 her own power jam. Later, XboxBree60 passed the star to HypnoThighz, who was herself sent to the box. When all was said and done, the jam ended 4-1 in favor of the Roller Vortex, cutting their deficit to 2 points.
While the officials reviewed HypnoThighz’s track cut penalty for nearly 3 minutes, they found no reason to overturn it, allowing Lexi Cuter to begin the next jam with a power start. She made the most of it, scoring 15 points and snatching back the lead for the Vortex, 38-25. The next jam was scoreless, then Lefse 4 Dead and Anne T. fascism traded 4-0 jams to keep the margin at 13 points. Captain Cordelia followed with an 8-0 Vortex jam before Battlerina added 4 more, which brought the Vortex lead to 25. Wheelie Nelson continued the Vortex run in the next jam, scoring 8 more before the Bodies of Water called a timeout down 63-29.
Ginger Snap came out of the timeout energized, taking a quick lead and scoring 4 points to get the Bodies back within 30. However, the Roller Vortex regained control after that. R.I.P.unzel posted a 12-0 jam before Lexi Cuter scored 12 of her own, with HypnoThighz’s 3 not enough to prevent the Vortex from extending their lead to beyond 50. Fanny Smack stopped the run by getting lead jam for the Bodies, but she was outscored 4-3 by Captain Cordelia, taking the Vortex lead to 92-40. One final first-half jam followed, where Ginger Snap scored 4 to cut the Bodies’ halftime deficit to under 50. Still, the Roller Vortex sat comfortably with a 92-44 lead at the half.
While Chippa Tooth started the half with a lead jam for the Bodies of Water, both she and Lexi Cuter failed to score in the jam. The next one was a different story, as Lefse 4 Dead raced out to a lead and outscored Krypta Night 8-4, taking the Vortex up to the century mark. Anne T. fascism got a power jam opportunity in the jam that followed, but didn’t take full advantage and only scored a single point. In the next jam, though, Ginger Snap scored 3 to cut the Bodies’ deficit to 100-52, meaning their score was no longer doubled by the Vortex.
Russet made her MNRD jamming debut in the next jam, and while she secured lead for the Bodies of Water, she was quickly passed by MadLibs (who had received a star pass) and forced to call off the jam. Lexi Cuter then extended the Vortex lead back to 50, but Krypta Night followed by using a power jam to score 8 points for the Bodies. Wheelie Nelson came back with a 4-0 Roller Vortex jam, but two penalty-filled jams followed. First, Ginger Snap scored 12 for the Bodies of Water – despite being penalized herself, penalties to two different Roller Vortex jammers allowed her to spend most of it on the power jam. The Bodies also started the next jam with Chippa Tooth as the only jammer on the track, a power jam that got extended when MadLibs was penalized mere seconds after finishing her last sentence. However, Chippa Tooth was later sent to the box herself, and she only took an 11-9 points advantage in the jam. That left the score standing at 115-83 in favor of the Vortex.
Captain Cordelia scored 4 for the Vortex in the following jam, but although Krypta Night was sent to the box, she scored 3 of her own in the same jam. Lefse 4 Dead scored 8 in the next jam to give the Vortex some breathing space, taking their lead back up over 40. A single point by Wheelie Nelson followed, then R.I.P.unzel erupted for a 12-0 jam to essentially put the bout out of reach. 7 more points capped off Lexi Cuter’s 52-point performance and extended the lead to 147-86. One last jam followed, where Captain Cordelia got a power jam, but only scored 4 points to Krypta Night’s 1 before calling off the jam, ending the bout. The Roller Vortex won 151-87, with the 64-point margin larger than any margin of victory in any MNRD home team bout last season.
Game 2: Maul Rats vs. Wednesday Warnings
The second bout featured the Wednesday Warnings and the defending champion Maul Rats. Bri Zuss led off the bout for the Warnings with a 2-0 jam before Twisted Transistor made her MNRD debut at the jammer line for the Maul Rats. Twisted Transistor secured lead and scored 4 points, giving the Maul Rats the lead. In the next jam, Hurtrude Stein returned to the Warnings following a season-long injury to score 2 points and tie the game at 4. However, Crashy Go Lucky, another skater making her Maul Rats debut, re-established their lead with 3 points in the following jam. A single point for last year’s championship hero, BooBoo, followed, and the Maul Rats’ lead was up to 8-4. T-Wrecks came back by scoring 5 for the Warnings, but a rare point for MeshugEnough in that same jam kept the Maul Rats from falling behind. Instead, it was a 9-9 tie.
Off a star pass, Sew Dangerous got the bout’s first power jam after that, as Speed Rita was sent to the box. That allowed Sew Dangerous to score 10 points for the Maul Rats, and while Speed Rita scored 4, the Rats’ 6-point lead was their largest yet. However, Sew Dangerous was penalized at the end of the jam, giving Bri Zuss a power start. Despite the opportunity, Bri Zuss was outscored 11-10 and served time in the box herself, and she also started the next jam in the box after an official review assessed her another penalty. Crashy Go Lucky used the power jam to score 4, taking the Maul Rats’ lead to 34-23.
Twisted Transistor continued her debut with a 7-4 jam against T-Wrecks, and although BooBoo followed with her second 1-0 jam of the bout, the Maul Rats only led by 15. Hurtrude Stein cut that lead in half in the next jam, scoring 8 to put the Wednesday Warnings back within 7. While Crashy Go Lucky and Major Threat split the next jam 2-2, another 8-0 Warning jam – this time courtesy of Bri Zuss – gave them their first lead since the first jam of the bout. Twisted Transistor came back with another lead jam for the Maul Rats, but was only able to score 1 point, leaving the bout tied at 45. Hurtrude Stein scored a point of her own in the next jam to regain the Warning lead, then Speed Rita followed with 7 points to put the Warnings up 8. While BooBoo got the Maul Rats back in the scoring column in the next jam, her 1 point was no match for Bri Zuss’s 4, taking the score to 57-46 in favor of the Warnings at halftime.
The Warnings picked up where they left off in the second half, as T-Wrecks opened with an 8-0 jam. Bri Zuss followed with 8 of her own, but she was sent to the box, allowing Gams to score 8 as well and finish the jam even. The next jam was a defensive struggle, as it took Hurtrude Stein almost a minute to break out of the pack and secure lead, and eventually score 3 points. However, Crashy Go Lucky followed with the highest-scoring jam by either team all night, scoring 16 to T-Wrecks’s 2 to cut the Rats’ deficit to 8. Twisted Transistor then halved that in the next jam, scoring 8 points, with Speed Rita’s 4 the only things keeping the Warnings in the lead. The next jam was scoreless, as Bri Zuss called it off while on the power jam, giving the Warnings a power start to the following one.
The Warnings opted to send Val Kyrie to the line, and she was called with a track cut mere seconds in to negate the power jam. She was later penalized again, but both defenses held strong and prevented the jammers from scoring. The jam initially appeared to end scoreless, but after discussion, the officials gave 4 points to Gams to tie the bout at 82. BooBoo raced out to the lead in the next jam, scoring 3 to give the Maul Rats their first lead since the first half. However, Major Threat snatched the lead right back with a 4-0 Wednesday Warnings jam. Not to be outdone, Twisted Transistor outscored Hurtrude Stein 8-4 to put the Maul Rats back on top. Still, T-Wrecks came right back with a massive 10-0 jam to put the Warnings at the century mark and give them a 7-point lead, the bout’s first multi-pass lead (to end a jam) in 7 jams.
After review, T-Wrecks was assessed a penalty at the end of that jam, but was immediately let out of the box once the next one started. That allowed her to secure lead and score 4 points, giving the Warnings the first double-digit lead in what felt like forever. Bri Zuss added 4 of her own in the next jam, and the Warnings began to pull away. Major Threat followed with the Warnings’ third straight 4-point jam, but a delayed call-off allowed BooBoo to steal a point for the Maul Rats. Another lead jam for the Warnings – their fifth in a row – followed courtesy of Bri Zuss, who scored 2 points to take the lead up to 20 with 1:15 to go.
Knowing this could be the last jam, especially since they were out of timeouts, the Maul Rats sent Twisted Transistor to the line. While the rookie had a solid night overall, she was beaten out of the pack by Hurtrude Stein, sealing the bout’s fate. Hurtrude Stein was outscored 8-3, but she called off the jam as soon as the game clock hit zero, giving the Warnings a hard-fought 117-102 win. The back-and-forth bout featured six lead changes and four ties. In December, the bouts are rematches of last year’s semifinals: the Wednesday Warnings face the Bodies of Water before the Maul Rats take on the Roller Vortex.
