Season 13 Championships: What is Love? Recap
Garda Belts vs Rockits
The Garda Belts and the Rockits faced off to decide the 3rd place spot for the season. The game was close from the very start. The Rockits and Gardas each kept putting a couple of points on the board for the first few jams. The Gardas’ defense led by Brutal Brit, Olga Ogilthorpe, and Baller prevented the Rockits from getting any multiple-scoring jams at first. While Hal’luci-Jen scored 9 points for the Garda Belts the fourth jam of the game, Manilla Ice had the highest scoring jam of the first half, nabbing 15 points and giving the Rockits a seven point lead over the Garda Belts. The Rockits’ blockers did a good job of drawing cuts on jammers and giving them a couple of power jams, but the Gardas’ defense was able to squeeze their jammer through.
The Gardas responded with a couple of high scoring jams of their own- 13 point jams by both Second Hand Smoke and Bri Zuss kept the Rockits’ defense busy. But Animal, Surly Bird, and Madrad managed the track real estate nicely for the Rockits and kept opening up the inside lanes for their jammers, and separating the Gardas up, forcing them to play one-on-one defense. At the end of the first half, the Rockits were in the lead – 64 to 59 over the Garda Belts.
The second half started with the Rockits putting up 9 points with a jam by Obscene Sheen, followed in the next jam by Sarin Dipity scoring 9 of her own for the Gardas. Crust Almighty, Knoxzer Blockoff, and Anita Spankston led the Gardas’ blockers in keeping the Rockits to several no-scoring jams during the second half. An amazing 27 point jam by Ida Sockher for the Gardas, along with a 14 point jam by Second Hand Smoke allowed the Garda Belts to pull ahead. The Rockits had a 10 point jam by Moose Def-initely and a 14 point jam by Manilla Ice, along with great footwork and blocking by Whacks Poetic and JoJo Juke’em to keep the Gardas at bay. Ida had a 17 point jam in the second-to-last jam of the night, sealing the Garda Belts’ win over the Rockits to earn third place for the season with a score of 163 – 117.
The Whoop Azz award for the game went to Ida Sockher. The Derby 4 All Player of the Game award went to Manilla Ice. Congratulations!
