Atomic Bombshells Win the Golden Skate
By Drewraffe
In the second bout of the night, the Rockits faced off against the Atomic Bombshells to see who would take ownership of the Golden Skate for the year.
In the first jam, the Atomic Bombshells’ Brickyard took lead over Dreidel Robber and scored 20 points, which started the Atomic Bombshells’ slow ascent to the Golden Skate. Throughout the first half, both teams went almost 1:1 for lead jams, but the Atomic Bombshells defense proved to be too much for the Rockits, who were unable to gain much traction for most of the half and struggled with penalties, resulting in a score of 100-40 Atomic Bombshells at halftime.
In the second half, the Atomic Bombshells defense continued to dominate while their jammers continued to slowly build their lead. While still equally trading lead jam back and forth between the two teams, the Bombshells traded places with the Rockits, gaining lead fives times in a row towards the end of the bout. Neither team’s defense made it easy on opposing jammers, with both jammers being held in the pack for at least 30 seconds during multiple jams. The end of the bout became a defensive battle, with the Atomic Bombshells being held almost scoreless near the end and the Rockits scoring only 10 points in the last four jams, bringing them slowly closer to taking the lead. In the end the Atomic Bombshells, plagued by penalties near the end of the bout, were able to hold off the Rockits with a final score of 166-107 and the right to carry the Golden Skate for the next year.
