The Naughty List: Dagger Dolls Roasted By Atomic Bombshells
By Fire Wally
The Atomic Bombshells dominated their game against the Dagger Dolls at the Minnesota RollerGirls December Naughty List event. Leading from the first whistle to the end of the game, the Bombshells earned their first victory in the Minnesota RollerGirls regular season 181-87.
First Half
The Atomic Bombshells started out the Naughty List with a skater new to them and new to the Minnesota RollerGirls – Brickyard (number 400), who Minnesotan derby fans may have seen skate with her former league, the Arch Rival Roller Girls, at WFTDA Championships in November. Facing off against Dagger Dolls veteran Shiver Me Kimbers, Brickyard earned lead jammer, then took advantage of a power jam opportunity to score 14 points before calling off the jam – making a great first impression on Bombshells fans, for certain. Neither team earned lead jammer on the next jam, but dolls jammers Wolfe Bite and (after a star pass) BiPolarBear were able to outscore the Bombshells to make the score 18-8.
BiPolarBear found herself starting the next jam in the Surly Sin Bin after a track cut penalty at the end of the previous jam, leaving Roley Ann Lena jamming alone for the Bombshells. Another hectic jam ensued, with Lena making a visit to the penalty box after earning lead and the Dolls passing the jammer’s helmet cover to Ova Acheiva. Roley was able to outscore the Dolls, aided by some lock-down blocking by Hurtrude Stein and mAlice, who prevented the Dolls’ jammers from escaping the front of the pack.
That made the score 36-22 in favor of the Bombshells, which Brickyard expanded to 45-22 with a very quick 9-points. Shiver Me Kimbers then struck back for the dolls with 9 points of her own on the chaotic jam that followed, where Riotchu and Kimbers both took turns in the penalty box. With 9 minutes remaining in the first half, the Bombshells led 54-31.
Thanks to some excellent defensive play by the Bombshells’s blocking corps, the Dolls would be stuck at that 31 points until the final moments of the first half. Bombshells blockers tenaciously shoved the Dolls’ jammers into the infield or formed triangles of orange blockers impeding their path. At times when it looked like the pink jammer had a lane, a sandblastHER or a Mugsy Marauder or a Hurtrude Stein would get in their way at just the right moment to stop the advance. Meanwhile, Trudy, Brickyard, Riotchu, and Mugsy all put points on the board as jammer, leading to a 100-35 Bombshells lead going into halftime.
Second Half
The Dolls were able to get back some scoring rhythm in the second half, but the Bombshells continued to dominate the lead jammer calls and outpace the Dolls’ offense throughout the rest of the game. Brickyard scored a quick 4 points on the first jam, then Roley Ann Lena followed up with 15 more on the 2-minute slog that followed. Already the score stood at 119-39 Bombshells with 15 minutes left in the game.
The brightest spot for the Dagger Dolls came from some excellent jamming and blocking work by Winona Collider, including an 18-point jam about with about 10 minutes to go in the game. Taking advantage of a messy pack and some offensive help from Kung POW Bitchin’, Wino weaved and pushed her way through the pack deftly. Playing without Jacked Pipes clearly hurt the Dolls’ offensive production, but they continue to develop jamming talent throughout the roster, which should help them as the season goes on.
Even though the Bombshells were up by nearly 100 points with lead jammer during the last jam of the night, Mugsy Marauder decided to keep the jam going and try to rack up more points by the time the game ended. Diamond Rough did her part on defense by containing Shotgun Millie, and after a star pass to LaRotonda, the Bombshells had earned 181 points to the Dolls 87 as the final whistle blew on the game.
Bout Highlights
First Half, Jam 4 – Bombshells drop the hammer on both sides of the line in this jam. Brickyard shoves Kattoo onto the ground to earn lead, then moments later Smoka Hontas lines up Dolls’ jammer Killsey McMurder and blasts her to the ground outside the track.
First Half, Jam 12 – Kung POW Bitchin’ and Winona Collider are the only two Dagger Dolls on the track, but form a dynamic duo to lock down Riotchu, dancing around Bombshell offensive maneuvers to give Shiver Me Kimbers enough time to complete a pass.
Second Half, Jam 1 – Brickyard is already having a great game, and gets lead early in this jam, but Shiver Me Kimbers makes sure she’s paying attention, giving her a solid hip-check down and to the infield on her scoring pass, then did it again as she was calling off the jam.
Second Half, Jam 12 – Polly Punchkin is alone at jammer after a Brickyard track cut, but Hurtrude Stein and Ms. B’Hayven are formed in a front-back pair and have her totally stuck. Smoka Hontas puts herself in just the right position to keep the other Orange blockers in the pack and legally blocking.
Halftime Bonus
With love and holiday spirit in the air, the Roy was delighted to a marriage proposal as the Dolls and Bombshells were returning from their halftime break! Congratulations to Steel Magnalia and Kevin and here’s to seeing the both of you together at many bouts in the future.
