Beauty and the Bruisers: Rockits Claim Third Place Over Dagger Dolls
By: Fire Wally
The Rockits survived a late rally from the Dagger Dolls to win the opening event of Saturday’s Beauty and the Brawlers bout 158-130. Led by lead scorer Commander Nix, the Rockits displayed the same fluid jamming and strategic pack speed management fans have seen all year, earning the victory in the third place bout.
First Half
The game started out even and defense-heavy, with the Dolls’ Psycho Novia and the Rockits’ MeshugEnough trading quick jams for 4 and 3 points, followed by a scoreless jam. Tegan N. Scare-ya followed up with a 4 point jam to make the score 7-4 Rockits with 14 minutes remaining in the half.
Rockits jammer Commander Nix then quickly gained lead jammer status, and instead of calling off the jam after a single scoring pass opted to keep the jam going while a strong Rockits wall contained Sagittearitup on her first scoring pass. Nix skated for 15 points while Betsy Wrecksie, KillaHertz, Ana Stick, and Surly Bird recycled in front of the Dolls jammer, keeping her to 4 points.
Coochie Coup added 7 to the Rockits’ total on the next jam, but then Naughty Kitty struck back for the Dagger Dolls. Kitty started with jammer-on-jammer defense against the Rockits’ Konceal’N Kari, then escaped through the middle as Hannah Shot First knocked Kari to the ground at the front of the pack. Kayzilla, Aurora Whorealis, and Kung POW Bitchin’ joined Hannah to contain Kari long enough for Naughty Kitty to earn 9 points for the Dolls, making the score 29-19 Rockits with 9 minutes left in the half.
The Rockits then took advantage of a string of Dolls jammer penalties and put together a string of high-scoring jams. Frau Scientits, Commander Nix, and Salvador Brawlie each completed multiple scoring passes to bring the score up to 83-33 before the last jam of the half. A penalty late in jam 11 gave Shiver Me Kimbers a chance to eat up some of that deficit by starting on a power jam in jam 12. After sneaking through quickly on the inside line, Kimbers dodged the Rockits blockers to bring the score back to 86-52 Rockits at the half.
Second Half
Kimbers took back 1 more point from the Rockits in the first jam of the second half, but the Rockits then started another dominant stretch. After MadRad drew a track cut penalty on Dolls’ jammer Lydia Punch, Tegan N. Scare-ya used the power jam opportunity to rack up 14 points. Commander Nix added 23 points on the next jam, taking advantage of some stellar offensive blocking from Rhea Volt and MeshugEnough. A few jams of back-and-forth with the Dolls made the score 75-137 Rockits with 8 minutes left in the game.
A power jam opportunity on the next jam gave Kimbers a chance to strike back again for the Dolls. After skating for a few easy scoring passes unopposed, she earned even more while Kayzilla, Lydia Punch, A-Whore, and Norwegian Mafia contained the Rockits jammer out of the box, totaling a huge 30 point jam. Dolls jammers Destiny’s Problem Child, Shotgun Millie, and Hannah Shot First kept the scoring run going, but time ran out on the Dolls’ rally with the Rockits still leading 158-130, earning the Rockits third place in the tenth Minnesota RollerGirls home season.
