March Radness: The Preview
The tenth annual race for the Golden Skate enters the home stretch Saturday, as the four Minnesota RollerGirls home teams face off in two semi-final
bouts that will determine who gets to skate for the championship. Each team has had to work hard to learn from their home season successes and failures and improve for the final run at the title. Here’s what each team needs to do to make it to the championship bout.
Garda Belts vs. Dagger Dolls
Previous Result: Gardas won 193-70 at The Blocking Dead
Top Scorers: Slambda Phage for the Gardas, Shiver Me Kimbers for the Dagger Dolls.
Key Matchup: Phage vs. Wall of Dolls. Slambda Phage is a scoring threat in almost any situation, but she’s especially dangerous against a wall that has been cut down by blocker penalties. The Dagger Dolls’ best chance to contain Phage is to make sure she’s always fighting against four pink blockers working together.
Atomic Bombshells vs. Rockits
Previous Result: Rockits won 122-119 at The Blocking Dead
Top Scorers: Fannie Tanner for the Bombshells, Commander Nix for the Rockits.
Key Matchup: Bombshell jammers vs. The Clock. The Rockits have proven themselves most adept at clock management this season, not hesitating to make the pack race when they want to burn time off the clock. If the Rockits go up in the second half, watch for the Bombshells to try to trap a Rockit blocker to prevent the pack from racing and give the Bombshells’ active jammer a better chance of putting points on the board before time runs out.
