Seeing Double Header: The Preview
The Minnesota RollerGirls team up for the fourth year in a row with the Minnesota Swarm lacrosse team to bring you two fast-paced, hard-hitting sports back to back! After the Swarm take on the Edmonton Rush, the Minnesota RollerGirls All-Stars will skate against Team United Women’s Roller Derby in a rematch of the All-Stars’ narrow loss in December. Here’s what to watch out for:
New Leadership
Following the retirement of long-time coach Dantigravity, the All-Stars will be steered by a brand new coaching staff of Betsy Wrecksie and Garrison Killer. Betsy brings a sharp eye for roller derby and years of experience as a skater for the Rockits and Sioux Fall Roller Dollz to the position of head coach. Assisting her as bench coach is longtime league reporter and observant derby theorist Garrison Killer. Along with the formidable pair of veteran skaters Harmony Killerbruise and Slambda Phage serving as co-captains, the All-Stars look ready to bring a new dedication and intensity to WFTDA competition in 2014.
New Opponents
While newly formed as a league, Team United Women’s Roller Derby carries a serious derby pedigree. A number of their skaters came from the WFTDA Division 2 Mid Iowa Rollers, and they share a coach, Mark Muse, with the current MRDA champions Your Mom Men’s Derby. Team United pulled off an upset victory against the All-Stars in Des Moines on December 8th, showing the derby world that they’re a dangerous opponent despite being a new team. The MNRG All-Stars hope to avenge their 2013 loss in front of the massive crowd at the Xcel Energy Center.
Join in the Tradition
The annual doubleheader has become an important yearly tradition for the Minnesota Swarm and Minnesota RollerGirls, giving each other’s fans a taste of a new sport, and giving the RollerGirls a chance to bring roller derby to one of the biggest venues in the Twin Cities. Get your tickets today and be a part of one of the most unique events on the Minnesota sports calendar.
