Atomic Bombshells Survive A Late Garda Belts Rally To Win 125-94
In the first contest of Saturday’s Winter Carnage bout, the Atomic Bombshells beat the Garda Belts 125-94. Clean play and solid blocking from the Bombshells made the difference as they improved their record to 2-1 in the quest for the Golden Skate. This is Fire Wally reporting from the Fabulous Roy Wilkins Auditorium
On the first jam of the game, Garda Belt Slambda Phage stood on the jammer line against Fannie Tanner of the Atomic Bombshells, both recently announced as part of the new Minnesota RollerGirls All-Stars roster. Phage claimed lead jammer early, but a push to the infield from the Bombshells’ Diamond Rough meant she only scored 3 before calling off the jam.
The Bombshells struck back on the next jam. An orange four-wall of D-Rough, Bully Jean, sandblastHER, and Steel Magnailia held back Garda jammer Scootaloo while Crowella De Vil weaved through the Garda pack for 9 points. The score stood 9-3 with 17 minutes left in the half.
Phage earned five more on the next jam, setting up Shiva Shank’n to jam for the Gardas against Freeze Baby. The Gardas’ Tara Bichapart knocked Freeze to the infield at the start of the jam while Shiva juked a D-Rough block to claim lead. Freeze Baby was called on an out-of-bounds blocking penalty, giving Shiva a power jam. D-Rough and Jess LaRotonda cut Shiva’s power jam short, however, drawing a track cut that sent the green jammer to the box as time ran out on the jam. With 13 minutes left in the half, Gardas led 15-9.
That led to an unfortunate string of penalties for the Garda Belts, as a series of jammers and blockers took trips to the box in the next five jams, setting up power jam opportunities for Fannie, Crow, and Roley Ann Lena to bring the score up to 49-18 Bombshells with 9 minutes left in the half. With Shiva and two Garda blockers starting in the box on the next jam, the Gardas took a timeout to refocus.
No team wants to be forced to field just two blockers, but if you’re in that situation, Slambda Phage and Second Hand Smoke sure are two good blockers to have. Smoke and Phage contained Freeze Baby long enough to clear the Garda box and keep the Bombshells to just two points.
Roley Ann Lena lined up for the Bombshells against Phage on the next jam. Roley got bounced around by Betty LaRude, Myrna Ploy, and Scootaoo while Phage claimed lead jammer, but Phage was called to the penalty box for blocking to the back on her first scoring pass. The Bombshell wall of Hurtrude Stein, Messi Jigler, and Terror Swift trapped one Garda after another to slow down the pack and help Roley score 10 points before the jam ended for time. Crowella De Vil and Slambda Phage traded off 9-point jams each to end the half with a 70-35 Bombshells lead.
Second Half
The second half started with a series of quick shots by the Bombshells, as Fannie and the Crow added to the score. Phage hit back with 4 quick points for the Gardas on the next jam, which made the score 82-39 Bombshells with 17 minutes left in the game. In the next jam, Freeze Baby took the line for the Bombshells against Second Hand Smoke. Both jammers dug in to their opposing blocker lines and pushed, but a back block call on Smoke led to Freeze making a quick scoring pass then calling off the jam to trap Smoke in the box. The green three-wall of Citizen Pain, Slambda Phage, and Anita Spankston stymied Roley on the next jam, giving Smoke the chance to score 5 points out of the box.
With the score at 44-86 and 13 minutes left to play, the Gardas again fell into penalty trouble, starting the next nine jams at a pack disadvantage due to blockers in the box. As the Gardas cycled in and out of the box, the Bombshells jammer rotation of Fannie, Roley, Crow and Freeze steadily notched up the Bombshells score to 91, then 109, then 122-61 with 3 minutes left in the period. The Bombshells pack advantage also helped them contain the Garda jammers as the period went on.
The Gardas struck back late in the game, with a wall of Betty, Phage, Knoxzer Blokhof, and Myrna containing Bombshells’ jammer Roley while green jammer Soft Serve claimed lead. Myrna then drew a low block from Roley, enabling Soft Serve to rack up 15 points. Second Hand Smoke finished the power jam with a 14-point effort, meaning the Gardas had in total erased 30 of the Bombshells 60 point lead, but time ran out on the Garda rally, giving the Bombshells a victory 125-94.
