Pain By Numbers: Atomic Bombshells Break Late Over Dagger Dolls, 131-81

A close-fought contest by the Dagger Dolls and Atomic Bombshells turned on a series of power jams late in the second half. Led by high-scoring jammer Fannie Tanner, the Bombshells won over the Dolls 131-81, keeping them alive in the race for the Golden Skate. This is Fire Wally reporting from the Fabulous Roy Wilkins Auditiorium.

Shiver Me Kimbers exploded off the jam line and through the pack to start the game for the Dagger Dolls. Bombshells jammer Fannie Tanner was held up at the front of the pack by Kayzilla, giving Kimbers enough time to score a high five from her jam ref and call off the jam. On the following jam, the Dolls wall of Hannah Shot First, Kayzilla, and Kung POW Bitchin’ stymied Bombshell jammer Freeze Baby. Freeze then committed a low block penalty, which Destiny’s Problem Child took advantage of to score 10. Dolls led 15-0 with 16 minutes in the half.

Kimbers got lead scored 6 while Freeze finished her term in the box, but then was sent to box on a track cut herself to force a two-minute jam and give Freeze a power-jam opportunity. Naughty Kitty knocked Freeze to the outside to drag her back to the box, but Hurtrude Stein and mid-season Bombshell pickup Jess LaRotonda cleared the way for Freeze to score 5, making the score 21-5 Dolls with 13 minutes left in the half. As Kimbers was released, a back block penalty sent her back to the box, setting up a power jam opportunity for Fannie Tanner and the Bombshells.

Fannie easily cleared a short Dolls pack for lead jammer, then snuck past the outside of the pack on her first five-point pass. Shifty juke moves and some excellent offensive assistance from Diamond Rough led to 5 high-fives for Fannie, giving the Bombshells their first lead 21-29 with 11 minutes on the clock.

On the next jam, tenacious defense by Hanna Belle Lector gave Killsey McMurder time to strike back with two points for the Dolls. The Dolls attempted to pull a fast one on the next jam with a Star Pass from Naughty Kitty to Hannah Shot First, but BOOMbay Safire, Ms. B’Hayven, and D-Rough picked up on it and worked for force a track cut on Shotty. This gave Freeze Baby the chance to add 10 to the Bombshells total, making the score 39-23 with 8 minutes left in the half.

From there, things got a little bit messy. Hannah Shot First and Crowella De Vil traded stints in the penalty box after a series of track cuts, leading to a 2-minute scoreless jam. On the next jam, Crow came out of the box to score 2 to Kimbers 3. Following that, Kayzilla and Roley Ann Lena did the penalty box shuffle, with a number of blockers from both teams cycling in and out of the box as well. The result of the fracas was a 31-49 Bombshells lead with 2 minutes left in the half and Roley starting in the penalty box.

Shiver Me Kimbers again fired fast off the line in the next jam escaping the pack while the Dagger Dolls arranged themselves in passive-aggressive offense formation. Some great lateral movement and a hop over the apex got the crowd roaring for the Dolls. With the help of some fierce offensive blocks from Aurora Whorealis, Kimbers put up 18 points to tie the game 49-49 with 33 seconds on the clock. A 2-2 jam between Naughty Kitty and Crow put the score at 52-52 at the halftime break.

Second Half

Fannie started the 2nd half with a 4-0 jam, which led to a series of 0-0 jams featuring both jammers released from the pack at the same time. Since the number one rule of being lead jammer is “don’t let the other one score”, the smart play if you’ve got an opposing jammer right on your butt is to call it off and try again next jam. After a few iterations of that, it was 52-56 Bombshells with 16 minutes left in the game.

Killsey McMurder then grabbed lead for the Dolls while Lydia Punch and BiPolarBear held up Crow. Kayzilla then knocked Crow out and ran back, forcing a track cut and giving Killsey a chance at a power jam. The Dolls wall trapped a Bombshell goat, enabling Killsey to skate for 2 points. That lead got chipped away by Freeze and Roley on the next two jams, making the score 67-65 Dolls with 12 minutes left in the game. A Naughty Kitty penalty set up another power jam opportunity for Fannie Tanner.

Fannie snuck through on the inside for lead jammer. Hard-hitting assistance from Trudy and D-Rough helped her through on her next two scoring passes, which also saw the Dolls lose two blockers to penalties. Another blocker track cut forced by Smoka Hontas and D-Rough left a sparse Dolls pack, which Fannie took good advantage of to score 30 big roller derby points and make the score 95-67 Bombshells with 10 minutes remaining.

Those blocker penalties carried over into the next jam, giving Crow an easy path to lead jammer status. Crow traded brief power jams with Saggitearitup, then scored 14 while D-Rough, Bully Jean, and Madame de Stompadour held back the pink jammer who had returned to the track. Roley kept the Bombshells rolling with 10 more in the next jam before passing the star to Trudy, who scored 5 more while Dolls penalty trouble continued. In three jams, the Bombshells had gone from a 2-point deficit to a 123-71 lead with 5 minutes on the clock.

Both teams put up solid defense from there to the end of the bout, but the damage had already been done by the ladies in orange. The Atomic Bombshells claimed their first win of the home season by a final score of 131-81.
