ABS walls up Dagger Dolls, 194-29

It’s looking like the MNRG league championship might be the Bombshells’ to lose.

No strangers to a solid defense, the Atomic Bombshells stepped up their play last Saturday and showed the Roy what a solid, impregnable defense looks like. The Dagger Dolls played whistle to whistle, but the ABS’ pack controlled the entire game – holding the Dolls to under twenty each half while assisting their own jammers to score almost two hundred points.

Atomic Bombshells v Dagger Dolls

The Dagger Dolls’ Shiver Me Kimbers started out well by taking the lead against L’exi, scoring three, and calling off the jam before L’exi could re-enter. Fannie Tanner (returning from a collarbone injury) got the ABS scoring as Venus Thightrap held back the Dolls’ Ova Achieva. Dolls ahead, 3-2.

Two more jams, two more ABS leads. Skullateral Damage and Messi Jigler shared attacking duties on Dagger Doll co-captain Lydia Punch, but it was Bully Jean that pasted Lydia to distraction and a foul. Lydia stole four points after her minute in the box, but Lizzy the Axe and Freeze Baby scored 22 points in that time.

L’exi Cuter and Fannie Tanner took another two leads as the ABS’ defense struck at the Dagger Doll jammers. L’exi and Fannie put up thirteen unanswered points. Madame de Stompadour got sent to the box as the ABS jammer, but the Dolls’ Rollercat could not convert the power jam into points as Bully Jean and Diamond Rough kept the four-year veteran just inside the pack. Ova Achieva got the Dolls scoring again in the 12th minute for four with a deft dodge past Skullateral Damage. 40-11, ABS ahead.

Two more ABS power jams and four leads powered the women in orange through. Following a track cut by Shiver Me Kimbers, Fannie Tanner cut loose, apex-jumping her way to a triple slam as Venus Thightrap cleared the lane for her teammate. Lizzy, Freeze Baby, and L’exi Cuter all took advantage of the defensive strength of their pack on Doll jammers and continued to push forward the ABS lead.

Shiver Me Kimbers took the final lead of the half to the cheers of Doll fans – only to be cut short on another foul. The ABS’ L’exi (now the sole jammer on the track) outdid Fannie with a 28-point screamer of a jam, sending the teams to their locker rooms.

HALFTIME: Atomic Bombshells 100-16 Dagger Dolls

Shiver Me Kimbers started the half again, scoring seven against the ABS’ Smoka Hontas four. The ABS sent Fannie Tanner in against Ova – Fannie took lead, but did not stop the jam as Ova broke through the pack and started skating. With such a large lead, Fannie decided to allow the other team to score as long as time continued to tick away. ABS ahead, 118-23.

The Dolls’ Saggitearitup took three hard-won points as Diamond Rough threw Bully Jean into her. Freeze Baby took advantage of a jammer penalty from Shiver Me Kimbers and scored another nine unopposed points.

Smoka Hontas returned to the jammer line against Ova Achieva; Smoka matched strength for strength against Tiki Torture’s blocking and scored the lead – only to be sent to the box shortly after for a low block.

However, the ABS’ defense shut down Ova’s power jam by fanning* the Dolls for five full laps of the track, denying Ova’s forward advance. Smoka returned from the box and scored four. 131-26 (ABS ahead) with ten minutes remaining.

The Bombshells took another lead and another power jam as Madame de Stompadour and Shiver Me Kimbers faced off at the jammer line. Stompy took the lead, but a pileup at turn two cut her jam short – but not before Kimbers got called on another track cut. That put Kimbers to five penalties and sent her to the back – as a jammer.

That put Freeze to the line unopposed as Ova Achieva took Kimbers’ place in the penalty box. Freeze scored another fourteen. L’exi hammered through a well-laid wall made by Aurora Whorealis and Hannah Shot First and took the next lead. The Doll pack thickened after the first passes and L’exi – sensing trouble – handed the star to Diamond Rough in flight. D hulked up and began scoring grand slams of her own. Between the two, the ABS scored 29 in that jam – even with Aurora and Tiki walloping them. 178-26, ABS up.

The ABS had gone ahead so far that the Dolls seemed to run out of tactics to try. With so many power jams, the rhythm of the game had been shot to pieces; it’s hard for a game to be recovered from all that chaos. The final whistle blew: the ABS had won.

*Fanning: Here’s your tactics lesson for the day. Your defense stretches out into an agile wall on the straightaways, folds into a dense triangle or diamond on the inside of a turn (where a jammer naturally goes), then stretches out again. You rotate your players inside to outside so opposing blockers can’t focus on a particular player, and the opposing jammer can’t get past. Done well, it’s devastating.
